The Richmond Symphony: Appalachian Spring – Two beloved favorites inspired by folk music—Vaughan Williams’ haunting Fantasia on Greensleeves and Aaron Copland’s tender Appalachian Spring—cradle and console the 1940 Clarinet Concerto by the 19-year-old Ruth Gipps, composed as her fiancé, and all of the Empire, departed for war.
